Wild birds in ITB to be checked

BANDUNG: The West Java Animal Husbandry Office plans to take samples from wild birds around Bandung Technology Institute (ITB) starting Wednesday to establish if bird flu is present in the area.

""I need help to capture or shoot the birds. I'll take them dead or alive to test them,"" the head of the office's animal health subdivision, Musny Soeatmodjo, said Tuesday.

The move was decided on by a joint meeting Tuesday between government officials, ITB, Padjajaran University and bird watchers, he said.

Meanwhile, Yus Rusila Noor, a biodiversity specialist at Wetland International, said her research showed no evidence that wild birds spread bird flu, although she did not deny the possibility the virus was spread through the poultry trade. -- JP
