The Jakarta chapter of the National Sports Council and the Indonesian Bowling Association will hold the inaugural Jakarta Masters at the Plaza Senayan bowling alley from April 22 to May 7.
""The tournament is aimed at finding new talent to represent the country,"" organizing committee chairman Iwan Chandra said Wednesday.
The tournament will offer total cash prizes of Rp 250 million (US$27,488) and is expected to attract up to 1,400 participants.
""Bowling is a potential medal sport for the country. Our bowlers won three golds at last year's Southeast Asian Games in Manila,"" Iwan said.
Public interest in the sport has also grown significantly in recent years, evidenced by the presence of 75 registered bowling clubs and 35 bowling alleys with more than 700 lanes in the country.
""Bowlers from different clubs can test their skills at the tournament to prepare themselves for international competitions,"" Iwan said.
The Jakarta Masters will consist of 15 categories, including the Men's Master Open, Women's Master Open, Teenage Master and Senior Master.
Acting bowling association chairman Isra M. Tahir said participating athletes would receive extra points for their 2008 National Games ranking and selection for the national team.
