JAKARTA: The South Jakarta District Court exonerated Tuesday a former teacher of State Junior High School No. 56 in Melawai, South Jakarta, Nurlaila, of all charges after finding the charges against her to be unfounded and incomplete.
Presiding Judge Johannes Suhadi was quoted by Detikcom as saying that the charges against Nurlaila and another teacher, Jonny R. Elian, for ""running an unlicensed school"" were incomplete as it did not detail when and how the crime was committed.
Furthermore, judges ruled that the charges against Nurlaila for appointing herself as acting principal of SMPN 56 were unfounded.
""We have therefore exonerated her of all charges,"" Johannes said.
Nurlaila was named a suspect in a case filed by the Jakarta administration in 2004, for refusing to leave the compound of the school that had been officially shut down after a land-swap deal between the National Education Ministry and a company owned by former manpower minister Abdul Latief.
She continued teaching at the school's compound for several months after its official closure, believing that the deal to be dubious.
Nurlaila was charged under the National Education System Law for trespassing and forgery, and for running an educational institution without permission from the state. --JP
