BATAM, Riau Islands: Batam Police arrested five officials from the Batam City Revenue Office allegedly involved in counterfeiting vehicle documents.
Chief of Batam, Rempang and Galang Police, Sr. Comr. Eko Hadi Sutedjo, said Tuesday the five officials, who worked in the city's one-roof service system to process vehicles documents, issued counterfeit documents to allow vehicle owners to circumvent a 2003 government regulation on value-added tax.
From April to June, they had issued 15 documents for various kinds of vehicles entering the island, which caused Rp 428 million (US$46,251) in losses.
""We're still investigating the case, which might also involve police officers there,"" Eko said. ""We're seeking solid evidence of the involvement of our members there; we will not protect them.""
Meanwhile, Batam Mayor Ahmad Dahlan expressed support for the police investigation. ""If proven guilty in court, we propose that they be fired,"" he said. -- JP
