JAKARTA: The Indonesian Volleyball Association is considering competing at the Doha Asian Games in December, even though the association will have to fund the trip from its own budget.

The association's secretary-general Nyoman Sukesna said Wednesday that the national team was in dire need of more international experience ""to improve our players' techniques and skills"".

He argued the team needed to gear up for the Asian volleyball championships, to be held in Jakarta in August next year.

The team should perform well before its home crowd, he said.

Nyoman said the team's final defeat at the Manila SEA (Southeast Asian) Games was attributable to its lack of experience at competitions abroad.

He said that the national team had a slight chance of winning a medal at the Asian Games, although it faced a line-up of stronger rivals.

""We are number six in Asia after Japan, South Korea, Iran, China and India,"" Nyoman said. -- JP
