Housewife commits suicide over debts

BEKASI : Ashamed about being unable to pay the rent for three months, a housewife committed suicide by drinking insecticide at her rented house in Perum Titian Indah in Kalibaru, Bekasi, Antara reported Saturday.

Witnesses said Subiati, 35, was earlier seen quarreling over the unpaid rent with her husband Edi Purwadi who worked as a public van driver.

The mother of two children was believed to have drank the insecticide early Friday. She still managed to come to her husband who slept in the other room to ask his forgiveness over the quarrel.

The husband became perplexed when his wife suddenly fell over frothing at the mouth. Edi then rushed his wife to a nearby hospital, but she died en route.

West Bekasi Police handled the case and temporarily announced the cause of death as suicide.

""We will probe other possibilities but we suspect that she was depressed thinking about how to pay the rent,"" a police officer said. --JP
