SEMARANG, Central Java: The Internet penetration rate in Indonesia continues to lag behind the rates in other countries, with just 6.6 percent of the population, or 16 million people, on the Net.
These figures were provided by Intel Indonesia Corp's country manager, Budi Wahyu Jati, in Semarang.
According to him, neighboring Malaysia has eight million Internet users, or 33 percent of the population, and Thailand 6.5 million users, or 12 percent of the population.
Budi said language problems limited the number of people here who could use the Internet, while poor infrastructure made it difficult to distribute computers to many areas of the country.
""For instance, it takes two days to send two computers to a village because of the poor roads. And language problems mean the Internet is hardly used in villages, only in big cities,"" he said. -- JP
