NIS introduces new int'l curriculum

The Netherlands International School (NIS) has started using English in class in order to meet the increasing demand for quality education.

The school, located on Jl. Jeruk Purut, Cilandak Timur, South Jakarta, used to use Dutch as the language of instruction since its establishment in 1967. In January this year, it started using English in teaching pre-school children aged between 1.5 and 4 years. The use of English will be expanded to the European Grade I and II (aged between 4 and 6 years) from August this year.

""Within the next two years, the NIS will offer a full primary school using English as the language of tuition,"" the school said in a statement.

The use of English was the result of the school's decision to use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which was originally developed for Shell schools and has been certified by both the British and Education authorities.

""The NIS will be the first school in Jakarta using the IPC,"" the school claimed.

According to the school, the IPC, which was created based on the results of research in psychology, education and neurology, allows children of different languages to be taught both in their native language and English.

At the NIS, reading and mathematics are offered in Dutch and English respectively, while other subjects, such as geography, history, biology, science/technology and creative skills, including sports are taught in English, with additional support in Dutch for Dutch children.
