On graft charges against Soeharto

The Jakarta Post ,  Jakarta   |  Wed, 05/17/2006 12:34 PM  |  Opinion

In 32 years of power, Soeharto made Indonesia the fifth most corrupt country in the world. During his dictatorship, political organizations, intellectuals, the press, people, and the Consultative People's Assembly were suppressed and destroyed.

There is no justice in letting Soeharto go free from his wrongdoings. Not even under the pretext of health reasons.

Soeharto is utilizing his cronies in political parties to avoid facing justice.

He borrowed from international monetary organizations only to use the money for corrupt purposes, and let law-abiding taxpayers pay off all the loans.

Even state-owned companies had to be sold to pay off the loans. But look at his cronies and family members: they are all getting wealthier.

I believe the probe of Soeharto's accountability must continue, and he must be brought to court, if justice and the supremecy of law are to be upheld.
