JAKARTA: There is not much prestige in selling diapers, but at least that occupation kept Kus Pramawati out of trouble.
Police said Wednesday the diaper distributor sold unregistered cars to her friends and relatives.
They received the report three months ago, but arrested Kus only early this month, seizing four cars kept at her office, CV Triprama Mandiri, in South Jakarta.
The suspect had a range of cars at low prices up for sale, which she said she got direct from a dealership.
They previously belonged to state officials who returned them at the end of their terms, she said.
""She offered me a secondhand Nissan X-trail jeep for Rp 240 million (US$26,667). Car dealers price them at Rp 270 million,"" said Andri Prijanto, one of the buyers, in his statement to police.
Andri and the other car buyers later complained to Kus about being approached and asked to pay installments on their cars.
It turned out she bought the cars from leasing companies and put her company up as collateral.
The chief of the city police vehicle crimes unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Edi Tambunan, said Kus' 25 victims had lost Rp 800 million between them.
""The victims did not pay her in full because she didn't give them the registration documents. She promised the process would be completed in a few months,"" he said.
Kus is being charged with fraud. If found guilty, she could face 15 years' jail. -- JP
