TANGERANG: With an aim to increase local revenue, Tangerang municipality plans to put a tax on large-scale consumption of water.

The policy will affect companies and industries using water for business purposes.

""They will have to pay taxes for such consumption,"" the head of the municipal revenue office's integrated services unit, Ayi Ruhiyat, said as quoted by newsportal Tempointeraktif.com.

The office is in the process of listing companies it categorizes as major users.

The plan, Ruhiyat said, had been approved by the Banten provincial administration and would soon be implemented to regulate water consumption in the area.

In the last couple of years, the number of businesses selling drinking water has increased with the development of small-scale affordable water treatment systems. -- JP
