JAKARTA: Indonesia's male chess team could only salvage half a point in its collapse against Cuba in the seventh round of the Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, on Sunday.

The half point was contributed by GM Susanto Megaranto who held GM Leinier Perez Dominguez to a draw in 41 moves. The other three pairings ended in losses for the Indonesians to hand the more fancied Cubans a 3.5-0.5 victory.

GM Utut Adianto gave up his resilience to GM Batista Lazaro Bruzon after playing for 41 moves, as shown live on www.chessolympiad-torino2006.org.

IM Irwanto Sadikin was checkmated by GM Jesus Santiago Nogueira on the 38th move and FM Hamdani Rudin abandoned his match against GM Yuniesky Perez Quezada after losing his rook on the 40th move.

The defeat brought Indonesia down to 41st place among the 150 participants while its female team moved up to 36th after beating Azerbaijan 2-1. --JP
