State-owned firm PT Barata Indonesia, in collaboration with the United States-based Standard Car Truck Company, will export 275 bogies (the wheel assemblies of railway wagons) worth up to Rp 4.5 billion (US$482.32) to Britain this year.
The state firm's marketing vice president, Wahyudi Yuwono, said Thursday that the company would deliver 14 bogies weekly with the first batch being shipped on May 31.
He added that the bogies would be attached to freight wagons for mine transportation in Kenya, Africa.
""These are our first exports to the European market. We will work hard to ensure that our bogies are a success there,"" he said.
In 2002, the company exported 110 bogies valued at $250,000 to Malaysia.
Besides exporting bogies, Barata, in collaboration with Japanese firm Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industry (IHI), will also export watergates worth $500,000 to Kenya, said Wahyudi.
""By exporting bogies and watergates, we expect to increase the company's annual revenue to an average of Rp 200 billion,"" he explained.
He said that in the domestic market, Barata earned between Rp 10 billion and Rp 15 billion a year from the repair of bogies belonging to state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia. (07)
