JAKARTA: The young people of Petamburan subdistrict in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, staged a Muslim percussion festival or marawis Sunday.
They also arranged for orphaned boys to be circumcised at no charge.
Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat officiated the event, which was held at the Petamburan subdistrict office.
""This proves that young people can do something for society ... and challenges the notion they just want to hang out and enjoy themselves,"" he was quoted as saying by the city's official news portal, Beritajakarta.com.
Dozens of marawis groups from across Greater Jakarta took part in the festival, competing for a trophy provided by Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo.
Fauzi also donated Rp 10 million (US$1,052), to be distributed to low-income elderly people. -- JP
