JAKARTA: Traders at Tanah Abang market in Central Jakarta demanded Wednesday that the city administration delay the renovation of blocks B to E of the market.

""We're asking for a delay, pending an agreement with city market operator PD Pasar Jaya over the number of traders occupying the new buildings,"" said the general secretary of the traders' association, Ismet Roza.

He said that currently at least 30,000 traders were doing business in the market's four blocks.

""We want only our 3,500 members to have rental rights after the market is renovated ... The number of traders has surpassed the market's capacity.""

The textile trader said rent in the market was between Rp 20 million (US$2,105) and Rp 60 million a square meter.

""After we settle the first issue, we will discuss the rent in the new building,"" he said. -- JP
