INDONESIA: The Japanese government will give emergency aid worth around 12 million yen (US$103,000) to survivors of the recent flood and landslide in South Sulawesi that killed more than 200 people and left some 7,500 others homeless.

Japan is the first foreign country to pledge to help the flood victims, after also lending a hand to earthquake survivors in Yogyakarta and Central Java.

The Japanese embassy in Jakarta announced Friday that the emergency aid, including tents, sleeping mats, drinking water, and water tanks, was granted after the Indonesian government made a request for assistance.

""The Japanese government conveys its deepest sympathy over the tragedy. We decided to give emergency help based on humanitarian reasons and on the consideration that Japan has long had good relations with Indonesia,"" the Japanese embassy said in a statement. --JP
