JAKARTA: Thousands of people attended the Sunday inauguration of former women's empowerment minister Khofifah Indar Parawansyah as the new leader of an Islamic women's group affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

The event, held at Jakarta's Bung Karno Sports Stadium, was led by NU chairman Hasyim Muzadi and attended by Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono, Deputy Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo and Indonesian National Sports Committee head Agum Gumelar.

Khofifah was elected the new chairwoman of Muslimat NU in the organization's national congress in March for the 2006-2011 period.

Hasyim, speaking at the gathering, said he hoped the Muslimat NU would develop the organization so as to be accounted for on the national and international levels. --JP
