JAKARTA: The city administration is considering a plan to issue a bylaw making it illegal to drive a vehicle and talk on a cellular phone.
""The city police has asked the Jakarta administration to issue the bylaw. However, it still needs in-depth analysis and input from experts,"" city transportation agency head Nurachman said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com on Saturday.
Earlier, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Adang Firman called on drivers to stop using cell phones while behind the wheel.
The police recorded 2,256 traffic accidents in the city/nation during first six months this year, in which 597 people died.
Out of that figure, 1,191 accidents were caused by reckless driving, driver fatigue and cellular-phone related accidents.
Neighboring countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia prohibit the use of cellular phones while driving. -- JP
