TANGERANG: Despite last year's ordinance banning the flying of kites near the airport, Tangerang municipality says it is still fighting the problem.
""We realize that the 2004 by is yet to be effective due to the lack of public awareness about it,"" Transportation Ministry director general for air transportation M. Iksan Tatang told Detick.com on Friday.
The 2004 bylaw states that flying kites within a nine kilometer radius of the airport is forbidden, and carries a penalty of three months in jail or a Rp 3 million fine.
Tatang said that kites had caused several flight incidents, although he declined to provide details.
Airport operator spokesman M. Wasfan said pilots had often complained about kites being flown in the area.
""We hope that the public will realize the danger of kites in the airport area,"" he said, adding that kites could hit airplanes or enter their engines. -- JP
