JAKARTA: Prosecutors at the Corruption Eradication Commission on Monday sought three years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 150 million (about US$17,000) in the graft case of a former consul general in Penang, Malaysia.
Erick Hikmat is accused of charging illegal levies to process people's immigration documents during his tenure in Penang, from Feb. 19, 2004 through Oct. 5, 2005.
Prosecutor Wisnu Baroto said Erick, in collaboration with other consular staffers, inflated the fee for getting a passport from the official price of between 90 and 120 Malaysian ringgit (about US$25-33) to 140 ringgit. Erick was accused of profiting from the difference.
Erick also allegedly increased the family passport fee from 210 ringgit to 220 ringgit, and charged an additional 210 - 220 ringgit for speedy service.
Prosecutors demanded he return to state coffers the Rp 513 million he allegedly embezzled during his tenure. -- JP
