Officer accused of assaulting resident

JAKARTA: A resident reported Wednesday a police officer for allegedly assaulting him during a brawl late Tuesday, Tempointeraktif news portal reported.

Mochamad Taufik, a resident of Petamburan, Central Jakarta, said an officer with the West Java Police -- identified only as Deden -- and his unidentified companions had attacked him as he moved in to break up a brawl.

The fight, involving a number of men, happened on Jl. Petamburan IV, outside a church.

Taufik suffered head injuries in the assault.

In his report to the Jakarta Police, Taufik said Deden had pulled out a gun, warning him not to intervene in the fight.

""The officer will be questioned by our internal affairs officers,"" said city police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana. -- JP
