JAKARTA: Garuda pilot Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, once implicated in the 2004 murder of human rights activist Munir, retains the full backing of his company's labor union even though he is in prison.
Garuda Employees Union spokesman Tomy Tampatty expressed that support when he saw Pollycarpus at the National Police Headquarters, where he is detained.
""We want to convey our moral support because we are responsible for the continuity of his career,"" said Tomy. He was accompanied by Pollycarpus's wife, Yosepha Herawati Iswandari.
The Central Jakarta District Court in December found Pollycarpus guilty of poisoning Munir and sentenced him to 14 years. The term was confirmed by an appeals court; however, the Supreme Court exonerated him last week. Pollycarpus is now serving a two-year term for falsifying an official document.
Tomy and Herawati said Pollycarpus will retain his full salary despite his absence. -- JP
