Orangutans to be repatriated

The Jakarta Post ,  Jakarta   |  Tue, 10/17/2006 10:29 AM  |  Opinion

In response to the Profauna activists who held a demonstration in front of the Royal Thai Embassy, the Thai government is taking serious action to repatriate the confiscated orangutans from Thailand to Indonesia. However, the repatriation has been disrupted by political events in Thailand.

The Royal Thai Embassy wishes to clarify that the postponement of the repatriation was mutually agreed upon by both the Indonesian and Thai authorities concerned.

The Royal Thai government has been persistent in its stance and commitment to repatriate the confiscated orangutans to Indonesia. The new administration of the Thai government has neither a reason nor the intention to interrupt Thailand's prior commitment.

The Royal Thai Embassy was informed on Friday, Oct. 13, by the Directorate of Bio-diversity Conservation at the Indonesian Forestry Ministry, that the directorate is now working closely with the Indonesian Embassy and the Thai authorities in Bangkok to set a new date to repatriate the orangutans to Indonesia as quickly and safely as possible.
