President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono awarded the title of National Hero to eight late independence fighters Thursday as an acknowledgement of their outstanding contributions to the nation.
Relatives of the recipients attended the ceremony marking National Heroes Day, which is Nov. 10.
On that date in 1945, Indonesians in Surabaya, East Java, took to the streets and fought attempts by the Dutch to return to power.
Prior to the ceremony, President Yudhoyono led a moment of silence to honor the fighters' contributions.
Seven recipients received honors in addition to the National Hero designation.
Sultan Hamengkubuwono I of Yogyakarta was given the Bintang Mahaputra Adipurna award, while the other six received the Bintang Mahaputra Adipradana.
In addition to the eight heroes, President Yudhoyono honored the late Muhammad Isa Anshari with the Bintang Jasa Utama award. He is known for his fight against Japanese colonization in West Java.
Commenting on the award to his predecessor, Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, who is also the governor of Yogyakarta, said it would set an example for the people and stand as a memorial to the importance of independence fighters in the nation's history.
""This should be a reminder of their fighting spirit, sincerity and humility in the commitment to build Indonesia,"" he said after the awards ceremony.
