MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Makassar Police chief Sr. Comr. Andi Nurman Thahir called for calm following a report of a maid being raped by her employer.
""I hope residents trust the police on the case and we'll investigate the case openly,"" he told dozens of residents protesting outside the police office Saturday.
The maid, a resident of South Sinjay regency, reported to the police Friday she was raped by her employer, DW, at his home on Tuesday night.
The police then took DW in for questioning while the woman was sent to Bhayangkara hospital for a check up.
A similar case in August left the city in chaos after dozens of students threatened to expel ethnic Chinese from the city and held protests that turned violent.
A Chinese-Indonesian man had been found guilty of physically abusing his two maids and killing one of them. The Makassar District Court sentenced him in September to 14 years in prison.-- JP
