JAKARTA: Transportation, waste management and the ongoing construction of the East Flood Canal were among the priorities outlined Monday in an agreement signed by Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso.
The pact with the City Council focuses the city's development programs and sets the amount of next year's budget at Rp 20 trillion (US$2.17 billion).
Every region in the country is using a similar procedure to agree on priorities before approving a regional budget this year to speed the lengthy and costly political process of budget talks.
Under the new scheme, the city budget is expected to be ready by March next year, earlier than the usual April or May.
""The new procedure gives the administration more time so that they can provide better quality in their programs,"" said the city council's speaker, Ade Supriatna, at his office at Jl. Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta.
The administration is also under pressure to finish its budget earlier since Jakarta will have its first direct gubernatorial election in July 2007. --JP
