Recently concluded, the Jakarta Motorcycle and Motor Show (JMMS) selected the Yamaha Jupiter MX for the Best of the Best award while carmaker Mitsubishi took the opportunity to sell its Outlander sports utility (SUV) and Colt multipurpose vehicles (MPV).
Japanese motorcycle brands dominated the best motorcycle awards with Yamaha and Honda grabbing three each, leaving Kawasaki with the only remaining award during the show, which ended last Sunday.
Apart from the Best of the Best award, Yamaha's Jupiter MX also grabbed the best award in the 125-150cc underbone (""step-through"") category. Yamaha's third award was for its Vega R in the 100-110cc underbone category.
Indonesia's largest motorcycle producer, Honda, won top prize in for its SupraX 125R in the 111-125cc underbone category, its Tiger in the 151-250cc sports category and the Vario in the scooter-matic category.
Kawasaki's only award was earned by the Ninja in the 125-15-cc sports category.
While all participants brought their latest models and concept motorcycles to attract visitors, without doubt Indian motorcycle maker PT Bajaj Auto Indonesia managed to steal the limelight with its debut on the Indonesian market.
Better known for its three-wheeled motorized pedicabs here, Bajaj introduced its 180cc Baja Pulsar using digital twin spark ignition (DTS-i), which uses two separate spark plugs, offered at Rp 6.5 million (US$1,800) for its cast wheel variant and Rp 15 million with spoked wheels.
While the show was largely for motorcycles, carmakers also took advantage of the show. Daihatsu, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Toyota could be seen.
While most of the brands had already introduced their latest models during the Indonesian International Motor Show in July, Mitsubishi took the opportunity to introduce its Colt and Outlander.
While for most Indonesians the Mitsubishi Colt has the image of a minibus or pickup, the Colt Version-R is a chic, small MPV -- a crossover with a hatchback. Selling at Rp 245 million, it is powered by a turbocharged inline, four-cylinder 1,468cc engine with 16 valves, double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and Mitsubishi innovative valve timing and lift electronic control (MIVEC).
The engine produces 152 horsepower (hp) of power at 6,000 revs per minute (rpm) and top torque of 210 Newtonmeters (Nm) at 3,500 rpm channeled through five-speed manual transmission.
As for the Outlander, the SUV is powered by an inline, four-cylinder 2,359cc engine with 16 valves, DOHC and MIVEC. It uses a six-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic gearbox to handle 167 hp of power at 6,000n rpm and 226 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm.
The four-wheel-drive Outlander can be adjusted for use in two-wheel-drive, automatic four-wheel drive or locked four-wheel drive modes.
The Outlander G was tagged at Rp 475 million and Outlander G Limited at Rp 490 million (both off-the-road prices).
Another new car on display at the show was the dressed-up Suzuki Swift hatchback at Rp 151.5 million with manual transmission and Rp 162.5 million (automatic).
Improvements include redesigned front grille, front and rear bumpers, rear spoilers and rear lamps. It also comes with a double-pipe muffler.
Taking up the Ride Safely, Enjoy Life theme of the show, safe riding courses were also available to show participants.
