JAKARTA: Due to a power supply shortage triggered by a gas pipeline explosion, rolling blackouts are scheduled to begin Thursday in the city.
Muljo Adji, state power firm PLN's general manager of the Java-Bali grid's center for power distribution, said the affected areas would be Pondok Kelapa, Cawang and Pulomas in East Jakarta, Citra Habitat and Kebon Jeruk in West Jakarta, Pegangsaan in Central Jakarta and Plumpang in North Jakarta, as well as Balaraja and Serpong in Tangerang.
Muljo said the power outages would take place during peak hours, between 5 and 10 p.m.
PLN has suggested residents save energy to prevent further blackouts.
Muljo said the rupture of one of state oil and gas company Pertamina's pipelines had disrupted supply to the Gresik power plant.
The shortage of gas supply has led to a deficit of some 1,030 megawatts in the Java-Bali power grid. -- JP
