KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: An elementary schoolgirl from Lebolewa village, Aesesa district in Ngada regency, died Friday allegedly after being assaulted by her schoolmates, one of whom was an older sibling.
The victim, 7-year-old Maria, was beaten up by at least 12 other school children before being tossed into a pond and left to drown.
It is still unclear what was the motive behind the incident that killed the first-grader of Nebe elementary school.
The children, aged between 7 and 12, are being held at Aesesa Police Station. A preliminary investigation indicates that Maria was beaten up for refusing to go home after the children had been playing in the pond after school.
Aesesa Police chief, First Insp. Adrianus Ndai said Friday that the incident took place Tuesday when the children were going home after school. ""The children admitted to beating up the girl and throwing her into the pond,"" said Adrianus. -- JP
