JAKARTA: Transportation workers blocked Jl. Yos Sudarso, the main access to Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta, on Wednesday in protest over late salary payments.
The protest caused two-hour traffic jams in the area.
The protesters, numbering more than 1,600, comprised employees of state-owned bus companies PPD and Damri and state railway operator PT KA, as well as port and ship crew.
They demanded that PPD employees' salaries be paid.
""We haven't received the payment we were promised in August, before the massive lay-offs,"" protest coordinator from the PPD, Fredi Tenlima, was quoted as saying by Tempointeraktif news website.
Indonesian Ship Crew Association vice president Hanema Surya said most of them were paid Rp 25,000 per day.
The rally almost ended in a clash with police when they tried to clear the road.
The protesters later marched to the Jakarta International Container Terminal to hear speeches.
They dispersed at 12:15 p.m. -- JP
