JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police questioned Tuesday the wife of Yahya Zaina, the politician who was captured on film cavorting naked with dangdut singer Maria Eva.

Lawyer Januari S. Haribowo said his client, Yahya's wife Sharmila, told detectives she had received a text message from Maria's cell phone in September, informing her of the existence of the sex video.

She ignored the message, but an anonymous telephone call followed, during which she was told she could pay Rp 5 billion to stop the video's release.

""We have shown the text message to police as evidence,"" Januari said.

Maria has publicly denied distributing the video, saying that her affair with Yahya in 2004, then a House of Representatives member from Golkar Party, was over soon after Sharmila asked her to have an abortion when she was two months' pregnant.

Januari said Sharmila had also reported Maria for slander over her statement. -- JP
