In Fazal-E-Mujeeb's article ""Islam protects, respects women"" (The Jakarta Post, Jan. 2, 2007), he noted among other things: ""The respect Islam gives to women is not found in any other system.""
In a book written by Ibn Ishaq, it is pointed out that ""A man may divorce his wife, but a woman cannot divorce her husband. The Koran specifically states that women are inferior to men.""
When I handled the inheritance of my late wife in the South Jakarta Religious Court, her cousin with a haj title was not allowed to act as witness because she is a woman.
Therefore, what Fazal-E-Mujeeb said is not entirely true. The law in Indonesia enables a woman to file for divorce from her husband.
