TANGERANG: Tangerang residents no longer have to wait in hours-long queues to renew their driver's license.

The municipality's traffic police chief, Comr. Sudarmanto, said Tuesday that police would deploy modified minivans Monday to serve the community.

""But the mobile service is still limited to driver's license renewal,"" he said, adding that new applicants were required to go to police headquarters in Tigaraksa.

Applicants wishing to use the mobile service must show their old driver's license and ID card. The charge is Rp 60,000, lower than the Rp 100,000 charged at the police headquarters.

On the first day, Sudarmanto said, 50 motorists took advantage of the service.

On Tuesday, one of the minivans was seen parked outside an industrial zone in Jatiuwung, providing service to factory workers.

""I don't have to take a day off to get my driver's license renewed. It saves time and money -- which is very helpful,"" said shoe factory worker Sahbudin, who renewed his motorcycle driver's license. -- JP
