KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Days of heavy rain and strong winds have sparked a landslide and flooding in Belu regency, East Nusa Tenggara, but no casualties have been reported.
Six houses were destroyed and another 16 damaged by a landslide that occurred Sunday evening in South Babotin village, Sitamean district.
Dozens of hectares of rice fields and plantations have also been inundated by flooding in the area.
Approximately 130 residents whose houses were damaged in the landslide are seeking shelter with relatives or in other safe locations.
Belu Regent Joachim Lopez blamed the flooding and landslide on illegal logging in nearby conservation areas. -- JP
