The Indonesian Amateur Golfers Association (PGI) is selecting junior players to compete at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship in San Diego, California, in July, an official with the association said here Monday.
""We are in the final stage of the selection process. We will use the upcoming competition at Jababeka Golf and Country Club to get some top local junior golfers who can represent Indonesia in the championship,"" said PGI head of junior development M. Thamrin.
He was referring to the Jababeka-Fella Golf Junior Open, which will be held at the Cikarang-based course in West Java on Jan. 28.
""We will pick the 10 best juniors to compete in the championship according to their rankings in the tourney,"" he said.
More than 150 junior golfers under 25 years old from golf clubs in Greater Jakarta are expected to compete in the one-day competition. They will include both locals and expatriates.
The boys' division will have six age groups: under 8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and 18-25, while the girls will have three: under 10, 11-14 and 15-25.
Tournament committee chairman James Irawan said the course would be adjusted in accordance with the standards used in international championships in order to make the tournament more competitive.
Located in the Jababeka Industrial Estate, about 30 minutes by car from Jakarta, the 67-hectare golf course was designed by world class golfer Nick Faldo. It offers the challenges of a championship course, including water features, a wide choice of tees and a variety of pin positions.
""We want the juniors to sharpen their morale and skills through this kind of competitive tourney,"" James said.
He added that the junior tournament would become a more frequent event.
""We will make it at least three times a year and we are thinking of making it monthly in the future, if this goes well.
""More tournaments in the country will help improve Indonesian golfers so that we can see our players take part in the regional and international tours,"" he said.
