S. Jakarta holds mass bird culling

JAKARTA: Ten subdistricts in South Jakarta conducted a second mass cull of chickens, ducks and pigeons on Sunday, following last week's culling of 10,000 birds.

The subdistricts involved were Pasar Minggu, Tebet, Mampang, Pasanggrahan, Pancoran, Kebayoran Lama, Jagakarsa, Setiabudi, Cilandak and Kebayoran Baru.

South Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency head Edi Santoso said the agency had aimed to exterminate all birds in the area by the end of January.

The agency would also conduct door-to-door sweeps in the ten subdistricts in addition to the mass culling, he said as quoted by Antara.

The agency had received 5,000 applications from bird owners wishing to obtain health certificates for their pets. The agency had so far issued only 600 certificates. --JP
