JAKARTA: To encourage closer community links, the city police deployed five more vans Monday to be used for the driver certification process.

The vans will serve five Jakarta municipalities, adding to the existing four vans each deployed to serve Tangerang, Depok, Bekasi and Jakarta.

""People can still renew their driver's licenses at any of the city's police station, but we feel that some people don't have the time to come down to the station. The mobile service also prevents the unnecessary 'middleman' process,"" said Sr. Comr. Gatot Subroto, the chief of the Jakarta Police's driver certification division.

The vans operate from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on working days. The location of the vans will be announced through police radio station Radio Suara Metro, which can be found at 107.80 FM, and the traffic control center at Jakarta Police Headquarters.

For this week only, the vans will stand by at Glodok market, West Jakarta, the west parking lot of Pluit Megamal in North Jakarta, in front of Pondok Indah Mal I in South Jakarta, in front of the East Jakarta municipal hall in Cakung and at the Jakarta Fairground in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

Applicants must buy an ""insurance"" form for Rp 15,000, which does not provide insurance coverage but does allow them to register, as well as pass an eye test. Their license will be ready in 15 minutes. The renewal price for driver's license type A is Rp 82,000 and for type C, Rp 72,000.

Gatot Subroto said 150 to 200 Jakartans renewed their licenses daily. -- JP
