MALANG, East Java: Residents of the southern part of Malang were shocked Monday evening by what sounded like an explosion. The noise could be heard at a distance of about one kilometer.
Malang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Suyono said Tuesday that investigators found the blast was not caused by a bomb, but by the pillars of a house collapsing in Pakisaji district, Malang.
The house, belonging to Rev. Sih Ageng Romo Niti, 60, was empty. A bomb squad was deployed to the site but found no traces of explosives.
""The preliminary conclusion is that the sound was possibly caused by a falling pillar which hit the ceiling of the house,"" Suyono said.
The condition of the house was believed to be deteriorating due to old age, he added. -- JP
