Unseasonal heat blasts Padang

PADANG, West Sumatra: The grass in Padang's parks is drying and turning yellow as the West Sumatra capital has suffered through hot weather for the past three weeks.

Emrizal, the head of the Padang office of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, said the city's temperature ranged between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, far above the normal rate of 31.

""The high temperature in Sumatra is caused by the low level of wind pressure, which moves from the northern part of Australia to the Indian and Pacific Oceans,"" he said.

When the low wind pressure passes warm oceans, Emrizal said, it causes humidity, which blows hot tropical air to both the Asian and Australian continents.

Emrizal said the heat was affecting most of Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra and Jambi. -- JP
