'Garbage not seen as serious issue'

The administrations of Bogor and Bekasi have complained about mounds of garbage from Jakarta being dumped on their doorsteps in the wake of the flood. They have asked the city to pay more attention to post-flood garbage disposal. The Jakarta Post asked some people what they thought about the issue.

Sutina R. Soedono, in her 40s, is a kindergarten teacher in East Jakarta. She lives with her family in Depok, West Java:

Other than disease outbreaks, garbage is definitely the next problem that Jakarta must deal with.

The administration should collect the garbage and pool it in certain areas. The rubbish should then be incinerated or sorted out before being sent on to Bekasi. This would reduce the burden on the old dump.

I read in the papers the city administration is blaming the organizations that helped it clean up the clogged waterways and muddy homes for the garbage being off-loaded on Bekasi.

The administration must supervise all clean-up efforts so garbage disposal is properly coordinated.

Marvy Arnold Lumentut, 28, is a product manager living in Rawamangun, East Jakarta:

The city administration has yet to take the garbage problem seriously. The flooding in Jakarta, which was partially caused by garbage clogging drainage ditches, is proof of this.

Garbage was a serious problem even before the flood. Now it's only getting worse.

I've seen piles of garbage from the flood all over the city, like in Kepala Gading, North Jakarta.

Jakarta residents also need to take the problem on.

They appear to be unaware of the importance of disposing of their garbage in the proper manner.

To justify their actions, they bemoan the lack of supporting infrastructure like trash bins.

The government has neglected its garbage policy to the extent that now it can only force people to do the right thing.
