Certification offered for migrant workers

YOGYAKARTA: The International Labor Organization (ILO) representative in Indonesia, Alan J. Boulton, said Tuesday the organization would issue a recommendation to Indonesian labor training centers nationwide that they were eligible to issue international certification for Indonesians to work overseas.

Boulton said the offer was made after learning that Indonesian workers had only been equipped with local certification prior to working abroad.

""It's difficult for Indonesians to get jobs overseas if they can only secure a local certificate of competence as they would still have to undergo a tight selection process before they can eventually leave,"" Boulton was quoted by Antara as saying during a meeting with Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.

Sri Sultan said that a local standard of competence was not relevant for Indonesians hoping to work abroad.

""Without international certification, it would be difficult for them to work overseas,"" he said, adding that many Indonesians, including Yogyakartans, now worked in Australia, Hong kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

He said Indonesians should appreciate the offer from ILO and make use of it in order to improve their competitiveness abroad.-- JP
