Gossip shows are one of the most watched TV programs in Indonesia. Fans are mostly women, who can be housewives, career women, teenagers like me, or even just little girls.
There are so many gossip shows broadcast on TV. When we wake up in the morning, we have Insert Pagi. At midday, there is Infotainment Siang. In the afternoon, we get Cek and Ricek or Kroscek. And at night there is Obsesi. We can say gossip shows are present 24 hours a day.
There are so many reasons why I love gossip shows. First, gossip shows are very entertaining. Second, we learn about celebrities' life styles. Third, we can get a lot of information about celebrities. Fourth, we can find out the latest styles that are popular today.
Gossip shows can help us get rid of boredom and fatigue after school. They can settle our moods. When we feel frustrated, the shows can entertain us and help us forget all our problems.
Through gossip shows we can update ourselves on celebrities' private lives - for instance by learning how much money they spend, their favorite clothes, who wants to marry them and whether or why they wish to get divorced.
I realize that gossip shows are not educational. But we can't blame the programs. Gossip shows also teach us many things that can be useful in our lives. There are many celebrities who chalk up achievements at international levels so we can follow their lead.
A lot of people say that gossip shows do not suit Indonesian culture, but I think there's nothing wrong with them. We are educated and religious people. So I think we can filter which news is good and which is bad.
