TANGERANG: Approximately 300 members of the Betawi Brotherhood Forum (FBR) in Tangerang prevented No. 613 public buses traveling from Blok M in South Jakarta from entering the area of Bintaro Jaya in Pondok Aren, Tangerang, on Thursday.
Claiming the buses were violating intercity routes, the group members ordered passengers off the vehicles, forcing them to continue their trips by public minivan or motorcycle taxi.
FBR Tangerang head Desroni said the group was taking the law into its own hands in order to draw the attention of the Jakarta Transportation Agency to what it says are problems in the public transportation system.
""Public buses should not cross regions,"" he said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.
According to Desroni, some 60 No. 613 buses had been ""trespassing"" into Tangerang territory since 2003.
Desroni said this had resulted in losses for local public minivan operators.
Ali Rahman, traffic management coordinator at the Tangerang Transportation Agency, said he had asked his Jakarta counterpart to stop the buses from operating in Tangerang. ""There has been no response,"" he said. -- JP
