In proposing a ban on the sale of new cars in order to reduce pollution, the Minister for the Environment appears to have hit on exactly the opposite of sound policy.
Banning new cars will cause more old cars to remain on the road. Old cars create more pollution than new cars. The proposed policy will therefore not decrease pollution, but increase it.
Perhaps the Minister should focus his attention on the many old buses and lorries that spoil the air by spouting thick clouds of black smoke.
