PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Traffic accidents are killing approximately 30 people every day in the province -- and statistics show most of them are students.

Director of Central Java Police, Sr. Comr. Gatta Chaeruddin, released the figures at the opening the first United Nations Road Safety Week, which runs until April 29.

""The (death) rate is high and we are concerned that most of the victims are students.

""Through this program we hope students can become more aware of the danger (on the roads).""

The high rate of traffic accidents has been blamed on the rising number of vehicles on the streets. -- JP
