24 women injured as lift plunges to ground

JAKARTA: Twenty four female employees of PT Olympic Garment in North Jakarta were injured when the company's cargo lift carrying them suddenly dropped off its central holder on Tuesday night.

The women were inside the lift and about to go home at around 7 p.m., news portal Tempointeraktif.com reported -- and 15 have been severely injured.

""We had to take the cargo lift because we could not use the stairs -- the door was locked,"" said 22-year-old victim Nirwana.

Nirwana said she and her colleagues from the production unit would usually take the stairs from the second floor.

""But the lift suddenly fell down as soon as we entered it,"" she said.

The 15 women injured in the accident are being treated at the Sukapura Islamic Hospital.

Head of the reserve unit at the Cilincing police subprecinct, First Insp. Sutikno, said they had questioned seven people concerning the accident.

""We will investigate the accident and if the company is found to be negligent, (we will move forward with the appropriate charges),"" he said. --JP
