Former defense minister Matori dies

Former defense minister under the leadership of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri died at 9 p.m. Saturday due to illness, Antara news agency reported.

His body is being kept at his residence in the Tanjung Mas Raya area in South Jakarta. No details were available on where and when his body would be buried. When The Jakarta Post attempted to contact his daughter, she did not return the call.

Matori was rushed to the hospital on Aug. 27, 2003, after suffering from a stroke. At the time he was treated in a number of hospitals including in Singapore. In August 2004 it was reported that he was slowly recovering from the stroke.

Despite his prolonged illness, Megawati did not appoint a replacement defense minister during her term, which ended in October 2004. -- JP
