Rally planned for city's birthday

JAKARTA: Over 200 rally drivers will compete at the Rp 50 million (US$5,556) Toyota Jakarta Metropolitan Rally on June 17. The event is part of the capital's 480th anniversary celebration.

""All drivers are required to stop at heritage sites and historical buildings along the route and answer questions related to the city's history,"" organizing chairman Dani Sarwono said Thursday.

The event will also commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Jakarta's Canisius College.

Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo, an alumni of the college, said in a statement: ""The rally is part of the city's anniversary celebration. Therefore it gets full support from the administration.""

Toyota Astra Motor President Director Johnny Darmawan hoped the rally would help raise the people's awareness of environmental issues such air pollution. Toyota will feature its Prius hybrid car during the rally which will start and finish in Ancol. -- JP
