JAKARTA: Police smashed an alleged pirated DVD and VCD factory in East Pademangan, North Jakarta, on Tuesday morning.

The head of the industry and trade division at the City Police, Comr. Agus Andrianto, said his team had arrested four people and seized more than 100,000 DVDs and 30 computers used for copying discs in the raid.

""We are still investigating this case, including questioning the four suspects,"" he said.

Agus said the suspects told the police that a man, identified as B, was behind the business, which is estimated to have daily sales of more than Rp 60 million.

Separately, city police spokesman, Sr. Comr. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana, said police had netted 10 people allegedly involved in the sale of pirated DVD and VCDs in six different locations, including Jl. Gajah Mada and Glodok, both of which are well-known centers for pirated CDs.

The suspects, identified as Her, Hen Sib, Iwon Bro, Hon, Iwan Mar, AL, Jung Jung, Hen Far, Dedi Gum, and Sri Les, were arrested as part of a series of raids that have been ongoing since the end of May.

Police seized more than 10,800 DVDs, 8,400 VCDs -- some of them containing pornographic material -- and 1,200 tape cassettes as well as three copying machines.

Police also seized 10 original CDs, two boxes of CD covers, two ink stamps, as well as more than Rp 2 million in cash.

Yoga said the suspects would be charged with violating the Copyright Law and the Criminal Code on buying illegal goods, as well being charged for disseminating pornographic material.

The sellers could be jailed for up to five years if proven guilty, he added. -- JP
