RI junior open golf c'ships begin

TANGERANG: A total of 144 junior golfers from around the country are competing in the Indonesian Junior Open championships at the Gading Raya Padang Golf and Country Club in Gading Serpong, Tangerang. The event teed off Monday.

""The annual tournament is aimed at seeking new talents in golf and we hope that through this sixth tournament we can find some good golfers who can compete internationally,"" said S. Christine Wiradinata, deputy chairman of the organizing committee, on Monday.

Indonesia Golf Association secretary-general Zaenal Sudjais said that in the past few years more children, in both large cities and other areas, had taken up the game.

Twenty golfers from Thailand are also taking part in the event, which will run through Friday.

The open features four age groups: under-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17.

Celine Harijani, the 2005 and 2006 winner, will defend her title in the 15-17 age group. -- JP
